Am I a Candidate for Body Contouring?

Weight Stability
Most surgeons recommend that weight be stable for approximately six to twelve months before scheduling body contouring. Continued weight loss after surgery can affect results; future weight gain can stretch the contoured tissue.
BMI
A higher body mass index can increase the risk of certain complications, including delayed healing and seroma. Some surgeons set BMI thresholds for individual procedures. This is discussed in consultation based on individual anatomy and health.
Smoking and Nicotine
Nicotine in any form — cigarettes, vaping, nicotine pouches, gum, or patches — impairs healing and significantly increases the risk of wound complications. Patients are typically asked to stop all nicotine well in advance of surgery and during recovery.
Nutritional Status
Adequate protein, vitamin, and mineral status supports healing. Patients with a history of bariatric surgery may need additional nutritional evaluation and supplementation. Pre-operative labs are part of standard care.
Medical History
Diabetes, cardiovascular disease, prior blood clots, autoimmune conditions, sleep apnea, bleeding disorders, and certain medications can affect risk and require coordination with primary care or specialists before surgery.
Realistic Expectations
Body contouring removes excess tissue and reshapes contour. It does not stop aging, prevent future weight changes, or produce identical outcomes for every patient. A productive consultation includes a candid discussion of what surgery can and cannot accomplish for the individual.
